Rihanna is going to be honored with this prestigious award at this year’s VMAs
We all know that Rihanna is a proper pop superstar. The Barbadian singer, who released her eighth album Anti this year, has had one of the biggest hits of 2016 with her insanely catchy track “Work,” which features another man of the moment, Drake.
You might not think it, especially given how young she is, but Rihanna has been in the music industry for over 11 years, and across that time the singer has released some of the most memorable and successful albums and songs of all time.
Who else remembers that summer Rihanna released this song and it was number one for, like, the whole year (well, seven consecutive weeks, but you get the point).

Well, now Rihanna is set to be honored at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards with a special award only bequeathed to a select few of artists.
At this year’s VMAs, Rihanna is set to be awarded the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

Previous recipients of the award include Michael Jackson (obvs), Madonna, George Michael, David Bowie, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Kanye West, and Britney Spears.
To celebrate being the recipient of the award, Rihanna will perform a special set at this year’s proceedings, which take place on August 28 at New York’s Maddison Square Garden.
In previous years, winners of the award have performed medley’s of their biggest hits. The year that Justin Timberlake won, he sang classics from his career and even got Nsync back together for the event. Similarly, when Beyoncé won the award, she performed a medley of songs from her ground breaking self-titled album, BEYONCÉ.
Last year, Kanye West was presented the award by Taylor Swift (simpler times, eh?) and he announced that he was going to be running for president in 2020.
We’re SERIOUSLY hoping for a medley of Rihanna’s biggest hits. The 28-year-old has SO many amazing songs under her belt, like the insanely catchy “We Found Love,” “Only Girl In The World,” “Diamonds,” and “FourFiveSeconds.”

Basically, we need a 12 minute set of wall-to-wall bangers and hits, alright Rihanna? Thanks very much.
While no other performers have been confirmed, it’s been heavily rumored that Britney Spears will perform at the event, along with Beyoncé, who is nominated for 11 awards, and there’s even smatterings that Lady Gaga will make her hotly anticipated comeback to the pop world.
Regardless, we’re sure the VMAs will be an eventful affair…they always are!
You can catch the full event on Sunday, August 28, at 9 p.m. ET/PT, on MTV.
