The “Star Trek” trailer features a brand new Rihanna song and wow

There’s a new Star Trek Beyond trailer, which is important for so many reasons. One of the main reasons it really gets us though, is thanks to the new Rihanna track which pipes in about halfway through the preview. Called “Sledgehammer” the haunting ballad is co-written by Sia and fits oh-so-perfectly into the disaster-scape on display in the trailer. “I’m bracing for the pain, and I am letting go,” Rihanna sings. The song is available in full on Spotify and once you hear the whole thing you really get the grit and beautiful melancholy of the jam. Ri’s voice has rarely sounded better.

RiRi is in full power ballad mode, and it totally works. Apparently this track has been in the works for a long time. Billboard noted that back in 2014 Rihanna tweeted, “You’re just another brick and I’m a sledgehammer,” which is one of the lyrics from the song. false

Rihanna also teased the song yesterday on Instagram and she looked like the most BA gothic alien princess in the process.

We are here for this song. It’s spooky, darkly romantic, eerie, and the perfect accompaniment to all the explosiveness happening in this Star Trek version of outer space.
