The Rihanna documentary is happening, and it’s not your standard rock doc

Keep the music documentaries coming! Amid the buzz of Kurt Cobain’s trailer of Montage of Heck, it was announced yesterday that Rihanna will also be getting her own documentary.

The film, which is set to be directed and produced by Peter Berg, is an “unfiltered look into Rihanna’s life and how she’s ascended to become a global icon,” according to Deadline. But don’t expect the documentary to be centered solely around her music. The project is said to be “more a character study than a music film,” according to Berg. Suffice to say, we’re digging the premise. After all, Rihanna’s personal life is quite mysterious. I mean, there’s only so much you can derive from her Instagram account.

Even though details on the documentary have been scant thus far, we trust that Peter Berg knows what he’s doing. After all, his name has been attached to projects like Friday Night Lights, Lone Survivor and The Leftovers, just to name a few. And, if you remember, Berg and Rihanna previously collaborated a while back on Ri’s big screen debut, Battleship.

The doc is already being compared to Bob Dylan’s iconic 1967 film Don’t Look Back, directed by D.A. Pennebaker, which basically reinvented the genre by providing an all-access, intimate glimpse into the real life of a performer at the forefront of cultural movement.

This is Rihanna’s time. She’s already proven to be a compelling, genre-defying talent whose impact on music is undeniable. Now we’re ready to see more of her in front of the camera.
