A designer at Paris Fashion Week made his models look like creepy aliens, and the photos will haunt your dreams
Paris Fashion Week is upon us once again, and we’ve braced ourselves for the jaw-dropping looks that are sure to come. In 2018, the show gifted us with glitter-covered Giambattista Valli models and mystified us when Cara Delevingne rocked a reptilian ear. And so far, 2019 has already kicked things up a notch with Rick Owens’ show, which featured models that looked like they stepped out of a science fiction movie.
Vogue Paris notes that Owens collaborated with makeup artists Diane Kendal and Salvia to create the runway looks for his 2019-2020 fall-winter collection. In an Instagram post, Business of Fashion editor-at-large Tim Blanks wrote that Owens called the 18-year-old Salvia “a leader in pushing the body modification aesthetic which has replaced tattoos for this generation.” You might know her from her (sometimes disturbing) Instagram account.
For Owens’ February 28th show, Salvia and Kendal used prosthetic noses, black contacts, and horns to lend an extraterrestrial air to the models. As for line itself, the Financial Times notes that Owens dubbed it “the new ‘Diamond Dogs’ glamour,” referencing the 1974 David Bowie album of the same name. Owens also named the line “Larry” after costume designer Larry LeGaspi, who worked with Grace Jones and Kiss, and the glam-rock influences in the clothing were pretty apparent. Tbh, we’ve never seen anything like it.
We’re not sure what to make of Owens’ Bowie-inspired alien models, but one thing’s for sure: This was definitely a memorable show. We can’t wait to see what the rest of Paris Fashion Week has to offer.
