Sarah Hyland believes her "Modern Family" character is bisexual
We’re all for more LGBTQ+ representation on the small screen, so it’s no surprise that fans are super here for Sarah Hyland believing her Modern Family character is bisexual. And we want to know if this means the writing team will explore this narrative in upcoming episodes of the show.
The series itself has done so much for representing non-heteronormative relationships on TV, which ultimately plays an important role in mainstream acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community, so to hear Hyland suggest that her character, Haley Dunphy, is bisexual is important.
So far, in the show’s nine seasons, Haley has only been in relationships with men, but we’re hoping that Hyland’s wishful thinking (??) means she’ll be featured in relationships with women very soon. The writers of the hit ABC sitcom have yet to respond to Hyland’s assertion.
The 26-year-old actress immediately received an outpouring of positivity on Twitter, with fans thanking her for her response.
Modern Family is currently in its ninth season, and has been renewed through Season 10, so here’s hoping that Haley has a female love interest in the works soon. We’ll be tuning in for sure.
UPDATE, 5:16 p.m. PST: HelloGiggles’ original story stated that Sarah Hyland “confirmed” Haley’s bisexuality, but has been changed to reflect Hyland’s latest tweet, which said, “Did not reveal. Nor confirm. Just stated my personal OPINION… and a story line I would PERSONALLY like to see. But that’s just me.”
