While we love a good throwback, our favorite kind of pop culture revival takes something with a storied past and totally flips it on its head. And that’s exactly what seems to be happening with Riverdale, the CW’s new adaptation of Archie Comics. In a series full of sex and suspense, Riverdale‘s characters come to life with fully fleshed-out, modern-day personalities.

And we have to applaud the makers of the CW series for continuing to inject more diversity into the Archie cast of characters.

For one, three black women have been cast as Josie and the Pussycats (the comics portray them as two white women and one black). And two, the Archie LGBTQ community appears to be growing, according to this new trailer, which captures Betty and Veronica locked in a kiss.

While many Archie fans have speculated about the sexual tension between these two characters, the CW is going as far as to test out a lesbian encounter between these two.

But what does it all mean?

Is it just two teens exploring their sexuality, or will the smooch blossom into a full romance between the two? All we know is we definitely ship this relationship. We’ll have to wait until the series starts on January 26!
