“God, I love Portia de Rossi,” my boyfriend said to me one day with batting eyes during an Arrested Development marathon. I suspiciously cut my glance at him because I was convinced I had his type pinned down — And tall, lanky blondes were not it (or me, more importantly). But to be fair, Portia de Rossi as Lindsay Funke is kind of the best. Bitchy, bougie, totally clueless. For YEARS I’ve wanted to be Lindsay for Halloween — Specifically, Lindsay in the episode where she wears a “SLUT” shirt after deciding that she wasn’t receiving the attention she thought she deserved from inmates at a prison. If I lose 30 pounds and can find a really solid blonde wig, one day I just might make that dream come true. One day. But I digress.
Portia de Rossi isn’t just a babe for the sake of being a babe. She’s funny, she’s smart and she’s married to Ellen DeGeneres, which is enough to make me like someone on its own. She also has a super positive outlook on getting older, which is something I can appreciate the closer I get to 30.
Portia turned 40 in January and recently spoke to People for their annual “Most Beautiful” issue about what she wants to do with the next phase of her life:
I may still be in my 20s, but I feel like a big part of growing up for me is going to be embracing the idea of aging gracefully. And that means accepting the physical changes that come with getting older — Which is, of course, easier said than done (especially when you look like Portia de Rossi). But does that make me shallow if I want to make an effort to continue to look youthful, even as I get older? Portia doesn’t think so:
I think it’s important to feel good about yourself at every age, but I’m starting to stress about how much of that will depend on my physical image. Are you worried about fine lines and wrinkles and grey hair in weird places? Are you taking any sort of precautions to ensure you end up like Meryl Streep or Dame Helen? How much of this is taking care of your body versus straight up vanity? Should we care? I’m dying to know how you guys feel about this.
