Remember the Friends episode where Joey tried to look 19 for an audition? Turns out, Matt LeBlanc was also doing something to try to look younger for almost the entirety of the show’s run, and it didn’t involve wearing ridiculous clothes or calling PlayStations “whack.” On a recent stop by James Corden’s The Late Late Show, Matt LeBlanc let us all in on the secret he and his hair team kept for years…

Matt Leblanc was going gray by Friends’ second season, and just covered it up.

The salt and pepper streaks started coming in around his temples early on in Friends‘ run, LeBlanc said. Each season, the hair team needed to dye more and more of his locks black to keep him looking like Joey. There was even a mini catastrophe involving Just for Men once when LeBlanc tried to take over the hair dying process himself. It didn’t go well: he accidentally dyed his ears black along with his hair. Whoops! Best to leave that kind of thing to the professionals.

Maybe the Friends crew thought the distinguished look of silver tresses would have taken away from Joey’s dim-witted, lady magnet, meatball-sub-eating charm. But then again, letting nature run its course in the last few seasons could have represented how the character had grown — he was caring for the new chick and duck all by himself and only sat in paint like twice in the last episode, after all.

Since Friends spinoff Joey went off the air in 2006, LeBlanc’s embraced his Silver Foxness in all its gleaming glory. Corden rightfully described the look, which LeBlanc sports proudly on his current show, Man with a Plan, as “a triumph” in the Late Late Show interview — and we couldn’t agree more.
