When medical drama Grey’s Anatomy premiered as a mid-season replacement in March 2005, no one knew the impact it would have on network television. Now, well into its 14th season on ABC, Grey’s Anatomy has decided to kick it fully old school. Izzie (played on the series by Katherine Heigl) is heading back to Grey’s Anatomy for its 300th episode — in spirit — and fans are already anticipating the return of Dr. Isobel Stevens.

As a refresher: By Season 5 of the show, Izzie was hallucinating the ghost of her ex-fiancé, Denny Duquette (Jeffery Dean Morgan). This led to the discovery of Izzie’s brain tumor, her surprise marriage to on-again off-again beau Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), and her bailing on the hospital crew altogether in the 2009-2010 season.

Izzie was written out of Grey’s Anatomy after Season 6, reportedly due to Heigl’s feud with series creator Shonda Rhimes.

As the Hollywood rumor goes, Heigl was on the brink of becoming a full-fledged movie star in 2009. She had won an Emmy for Grey’s Anatomy and starred in hits like Knocked Up and 27 DressesHowever, and possibly due to her brink-of-A-List status, Heigl reportedly became unsatisfied with the material Grey’s Anatomy was providing her.

But while a core member of the medical drama, Izzie and most others revolved around the orbit of Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo).

Heigl’s public grousing caused Rhimes to write Izzie out of the show by 2010.

Since Heigl’s character was an integral part of the series, her Seattle family hasn’t forgotten her. Izzie is mentioned or alluded to periodically. And for the 300th episode, she’ll (sort of) make her grand return alongside fellow members of the inaugural season’s intern class.

Per Entertainment WeeklyDr. Izzie Stevens will appear on the series in spirit — alongside Dr. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) and Dr. George O’Malley (T. R. Knight), also in spirit — as the current doctors treat patients that remind them of their former colleagues.

The 300th episode of Grey’s Anatomy will air Thursday, November 9th at its regular time. It’s unclear how the cast will receive the ghosts of interns’ past, but it wouldn’t be Grey’s Anatomy without drama.
