Gina Rodriguez is developing two immigration TV shows, continues to be a hero we need right now
As if you needed another reason to love Gina Rodriguez, the Jane the Virgin actress is bringing some much-needed diversity to TV. Rodriguez is developing projects for CBS and The CW that center around the Latino community and immigration, via her I Can & I Will Productions.
The CBS drama is called Have Mercy.
It’s inspired by the German format Dr. Illegal, and tells the story of a Latina doctor who puts her career on the line.
The CW show, meanwhile, is a one-hour dramedy titled Illegal.
Rodriguez will executive produce the project, which is inspired by the experiences of Jane the Virgin writer Rafael Agustin.
Jane the Virgin, by the way, has also tackled immigration through storylines revolving around Jane’s grandmother, Alba, and her love interest, Jorge.
These upcoming shows are so important.
Not only because television (and film, and all media for that matter) still could and should be a lot more inclusive than it currently is, but also because news of these shows arrives shortly after the Trump administration announced that it would rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program. We need this now more than ever.
And we congratulate Gina Rodriguez for taking steps to bring these programs to our screens.
