Amy Sherman-Palladino confirmed that more "Gilmore Girls" isn't in the works, and pass the tissues
At this point, the will-they-or-won’t-they saga of whether the world will be blessed with more Gilmore Girls is starting to feel like a Lorelai and Luke type of situation. Of course, in that case, there was a happy ending (as we learned in last year’s Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life). But as far as more episodes are concerned, we might not be so lucky.
Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino said there are currently no plans to return to Stars Hollow and we’re not crying, YOU’RE CRYING.
Sherman-Palladino’s truth bomb arrives after a year of mixed messages on whether A Year in the Life — Netflix’s top-binged show, BTW — would get another season. Sure, there were some early talks about reviving the popular series, but after that, fans were pretty much left to wonder whether they’d said farewell to TV’s mother-daughter dream team for good — even though we need to know the aftermath of those last four words! Rude!
Then, between Gilmore Girls social media feeds going dark and Sherman-Palladino and her husband Dan Palladino moving on to a deal with Amazon, the message was already looking loud and clear. Even worse, our fears were pretty much confirmed in a Hollywood Reporter interview with Sherman-Palladino and Palladino about their Amazon original series, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Because the Gilmore question (of course) came up…
Would it be coming back or what?!
She continued, speaking to what it *would* take for Gilmore to return…
So, what we’re reading is that somebody needs to get Sherman-Palladino and her crew to another open bar, and FAST. She did leave the door cracked for more Rory and Lorelai down the road after all. Which, actually, may be more frustrating than knowing it’s really, really over. And…we’re basically back to where we started.
Luckily, there are a few Gilmore Girls-related things to distract us while we ponder how we can get that muse Sherman-Palladino mentioned to strike.
The aforementioned Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, for instance, hits Amazon on November 29th; with another strong female protagonist and Sherman-Palladino and Palladino behind the wheel, we have high hopes that this new series will capture a Gilmore-like sharp, witty, lady-centric vibe.
Or, for the Gilmore Girls purist: Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life is now out on DVD and digital download. Treasure it while you can.
