That "Divergent" TV series is finally happening, probably without any of the original cast
Sadly, there won’t be another Divergent movie headed to the big screen. But, the story is far from over. Starz has a new TV series based on the Divergent films in the works, according to Deadline.
And it will continue the franchise that started in book form before moving to film — and now television!
Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Ansel Elgort starred in the Divergent films from Lionsgate and Summit. That film series kicked off in 2014, and was based on a series of books by Veronica Roth. But, Lionsgate decided to forgo a fourth film after the third one (Allegiant) was released in 2016.
Now, for the good news!
The team who was planning to helm the fourth film is in the early stages of a TV spinoff of the franchise called Ascendant. Adam Cozad and Lee Toland Krieger are working on the project, which could bring in new characters. There’s no official word yet on whether the main trio will make an appearance to wrap up their storylines or how they’d be involved in the TV series.
But, Woodley has expressed in the past that she wouldn’t be on the show. And we know that all three have been super busy: Elgort just starred in Baby Driver (which may be getting a sequel), Woodley was amazing in Big Little Lies (which might get a Season 2), and James just appeared in Underworld: Blood Wars. Still, our fingers are crossed for their involvement.
Since this is all in the early stages, there’s no news about when Ascendant would actually be available for us to watch. But, it’s good to know the series will continue on Starz. After all, we’re not ready for it to end quite yet!
