The creator of "This Is Us" says we're in for more ~surprises~ and our hearts can't handle it
Did you catch the premiere of This Is Us last night on NBC? If not, now might be a good time to go watch it, because there are spoilers ahead. And if you haven’t watched it yet, you might want to go ahead and grab two to three boxes of tissues — trust us.
The show will follow one family in two different time periods: In the past, we’ve got Jack and Rebecca, who just had twins, and also adopt another baby at the hospital (who was abandoned at a fire station. Cue: crying). In the present, we’re going to follow these three siblings, Kate, Kevin, and Randall, as they deal with whatever life starts throwing at them.
The big ~twist~ of the episode reveals that these stories aren’t all taking place at the same time, and it’s a huge OMG moment you don’t see coming (till, a fireman lights a cigarette in the hospital and you’re screaming at your television “YOU CAN’T DO THAT!!!”). If you thought this was a huge TV moment, just wait. According to the creator of This Is Us, Dan Fogelman (who also write Crazy, Stupid Love…and Tangled!), he’s only just getting started.
“The start of episode 2 is a surprise, and the end of it is really a surprise,” he explains to Entertainment Weekly. “So there are surprises and you’re unfolding this family a little bit, because now the cat’s out of the bag about the device of the show, and now we can start expanding the audience’s knowledge.”
Knowing how much this one surprise twist WRECKED OUR EMOTIONS, how are our hearts supposed to handle anything else? Is there like some This Is Us tissue subscription service we can get? Because we need it.
Fogelman also has some big lofty plans for the show.
OUR HEARTS. We might need to start watching each episode twice to catch all these little things, considering during the first viewing we’ll just be bawling hysterically though it. But hey, we gotta do what we gotta do to take in all of This Is Us.
