The trailer for the new Netflix comedy series "Atypical" explores growing up with autism
The trailer for the new Netflix comedy series Atypical dropped today — and it is heartbreaking, moving, deeply realistic entertainment.
The coming-of-age story follows Sam (Keir Gilchrist), an 18-year-old on the autism spectrum.
And the trailer shows him struggling with fitting in, dealing with his protective parents, and conquering the world of high school dating. We also get a glimpse at his own family, as they grapple with Sam’s quest for independence and face a few of their own demons.
Per Netflix, Atypical tells this story:
The series is written by Robia Rashid, who also wrote episodes of How I Met Your Mother and executive produced The Goldbergs, and Ava Tramer. You’ll also notice a lot of familiar faces — including Jennifer Jason Leigh as Sam’s mom and Michael Rapaport as Sam’s dad.
As for the young talent at the center of it all, Gilchrist has been in all kinds of critically lauded projects, like United States of Tara and It’s Kind of A Funny Story. He told USA TODAY that, despite not having autism himself, he could easily connect to the character of Sam.
We cannot wait to see Atypical when it premieres on Netflix on August 11th!
