As it’s already been clearly established, this season of American Horror Story is going to be batshit insane, and not in the normal way we’re used to. There will be no ghosts, or witches, or aliens, or conjoined twins, or Kathy Bates. Instead, we’re just reliving the aftermath of the 2016 presidential election, and it is b-a-n-a-n-a-s. While we’re only two episodes into the season, and who knows what is coming later on down the line, AHS just dropped a crazy cameo on us.
If you, too, found yourself squinting at your television going, “Is that Nicole Kidman?” — yes, you are correct! That IS Nicole Kidman in an episode of American Horror Story! Because anything can, and probably will, happen on Cult!
Okay, fine, it’s not really Nicole Kidman. But her face is plastered across an entire scene during the second episode, “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.” And it’s DELIGHTFUL.
So just how did AHS manage to snag the Emmy-nominee for a quick scene? (That I hope we see again and again as a running joke?) During the second episode, we’re introduced to Harrison and Meadow Wilton (Billy Eichner and Leslie Grossman). They are married, and before you can even go, “…wait a sec,” it’s revealed that he is gay and she has issues with people touching her, and they’re best friends, so why not get married? Also, they’ve got a lot in common, like being co-president of the Nicole Kidman Fan Club. It’s a thing, and now it’s part of the American Horror Story mythology.
And even more amazing, so is Big Little Lies! Because Harrison just can’t not gush about how Kidman was completely transcendent during the limited HBO series, and honestly, same. And sure, maybe this is a small continuity error since Big Little Lies didn’t start airing until well after the election (on February 19th), and we’re led to believe the events of Cult take place shortly after the election, but that’s neither here nor there. If you suddenly find yourself Moulin Rouge! posters to hang on your wall, you are not alone.
