The very best of '90s TV is now on YouTube
The Internet works in mysterious ways. Sometimes you’re desperately searching for that one Lena Dunham tweet from like two years ago where she was talking about Lamby (her adorable dog), and you just can’t find it. Other times you’re looking for absolutely nothing and stumble upon a gold mine of gifs. Recently, a guy happened to be looking through his old VHS tapes, and came across four hours of stuff he had recorded back in the ’90s. Instead of keeping this blessing to himself, he shared it with the world on the Internet. If you’ve got some time, or just want to skip to the good stuff, David the Gnome happens at marker 1:07:00.
This isn’t the only ’90s VHS gem out there on YouTube. I did all the hard work for you, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the best taped things out there on the Internet right now.
1. Nickelodeon game shows
Remember how (as a kid), all you wanted to do was join some insane Nickelodeon game show? Everyone’s watched Legends of the Hidden Temple a thousand times already, and we all still dream about the Aggro Crag, but what about Wild and Crazy Kids? The goal was always to get you as covered in mud (and chocolate pudding) as possible.
2. The glory of Star Search
Ed McMahon hosted one of the original talent shows, which first introduced us to people like a tiny little Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys. The show was such a success, that they made an international Star Search, which was also pretty wonderful.
3. ’90s commercials
Wanna watch some commercials that aired on a very specific day in 1995? How about June 25th, a perfect day to relive the commercials that aired on Nickelodeon.
Or if you’d much rather watch some commercials from June 12th, we’ve got those, too.
4. Mr. Stick Stickly himself
Then, there was Stick Stickly. A personified Popsicle stick, also on Nickelodeon.
5. All That was certainly all that
Oh, oh, one last Nickelodeon. All That, Best of Season 5. There’s three hours of it. This is the show that gave us Kenan Thompson.
6. ’90s infomercials
This appears to be an infomercial for a skateboard. Everything about it is perfect. And it’s not just any skateboard, but it appears to be a souped-up skateboard that lets you skate uphill. The guy hawking it has a mullet.
7. Disney TV classics
I’m pretty much convinced that I’m the only person who remembers this short-lived Disney Channel show, Flash Forward, that aired for one season during 1996. It was about two best friends who live next door to each other. It starred a very young Ben Foster and Jewel Staite. It was great.
8. Old-school Jeopardy
Jeopardy will never go out of style. In 1990, they were doing crazy things with four contestants, and one of the categories was all about Jim Henson.
9. Muppet madness
Speaking of Muppets, once upon a time there was a made-for-TV special when The Muppets went to Disney World. Sure, it might just be one giant commercial for the theme park, but can you ever say no to watching The Muppets? As far as I can tell, this episode isn’t available anywhere else, because trust me I’ve checked.
10. Singled Out fever
Watching MTV’s Singled Out is like watching a slow-moving train wreck and you just can’t look away. I’m not so much freaked out by the premise of the show, but rather the clothing they’re wearing. Like, one guy in the crowd seems to have his gray sweatshirt hoodie tucked into his jeans.
11. GUMMI BEARS, you guys!
One full hour of The Adventures of Gummi Bears because these were bears, in medieval times, who lived off of their gummy juice.
12. Martha Stewart back in the day
If this is still not enough of a fix for you, settle in for over two hours of Martha Stewart Living. In this installment, you’ll learn how to make potpourri, frost a two-tier cake, and plant flowers.
