Beetlejuice fans have been through a bit of an emotional rollercoaster when it comes to a potential sequel for the charmingly creepy hit. Back in August, Winona Ryder said she “thinks” she can confirm the sequel; then in March, representatives for Tim Burton said plainly that it’s “not in development.” And our heads were like:

But now, guys, Tim Burton is giving us hope again, and we can only hope the third time is the charm. (This has been discussed for ages, so it’s definitely more than the third time, but we just wanted an excuse to yell BEETLEJUICE, BEETLEJUICE, BEETLEJUICE!) In an interview with Collider published on Tuesday, Tim Burton took a break from the Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children press event to discuss the possibility of a Beetlejuice sequel, and it’s good(ish) news, guys.

“This is the thing, it’s something that I’m interested in, but there’s so many stories [online], dumping Michael Keaton for Johnny Depp and this or that, and I’ve talked to these people and they didn’t wanna hear this so they just made up a story,” he explained.

Tim would want to stick to the originals, and that’s exactly why HE HAS TALKED TO THEM, guys!!! “[T]he fact of it is I have talked to Michael and I have talked to Winona, I’ve talked to a few people,” he added. “It’s something that I really would like to do in the right circumstances, but it’s one of those films where it has to be right.”

He’s waiting for the timing to be just perfect, Tim explained. “It’s not a kind of a movie that cries out [for a sequel], it’s not the Beetlejuice trilogy,” he told Collider. “So it’s something that if the elements are right—because I do love the character and Michael’s amazing as that character, so yeah we’ll see. But there’s nothing concrete yet.”

Honestly, we can totally appreciate Tim taking his time to make everything perfect, because the stakes are pretty high after the first Beetlejuice.   We’ll be waiting right here for the sequel, because a world without Beetlejuice 2 is a world filled with sand and creepy sandworms.
