Three different men played The Mountain on "Game of Thrones” and here’s what they look like IRL
In case you weren’t aware, exploder-of-heads The Mountain (aka Gregor Clegane), has looked ~a little~ different throughout Game of Thrones. That’s because he’s been played by no less than THREE different actors on the show. Somehow, this went under our radar, but it’s amazing how different they all look IRL!
In Season 1, the Mountain was portrayed by Australian actor, Conan Stevens.
In Season 1, Episode 5, “The Wolf and the Lion”, we saw Stevens as the Mountain get stopped (by the Hound) from dishonorably killing Sir Loras at Ned Stark’s (unwanted) celebration tournament. We ALMOST got our very-much-desired Cleganebowl then, but King Robert Baratheon had to go and stop the fun.
In Season 2, the Mountain was portrayed by Welsh actor, Ian Whyte.
In Season 2, Episode 7, “A Man Without Honor” we saw Whyte as the Mountain take on a less ~active~ role. He spends some time trying to figure out who poison-darted a guard outside Tywin Lannister’s door (it was ol’ Jaqen H’ghar per Arya’s request, if you recall).
And finally, most recently, the Mountain has been portrayed by professional strongman Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson since Season 4.
And, not that you could forget, In Season 4, Episode 8, “The Mountain and the Viper” we saw Björnsson as the Mountain obliterate poor Oberyn Martell in one of the most gruesome Thrones fight scenes to date.
Björnsson’s played the Mountain the longest, so he’s more than likely not going to depart anytime soon. In fact, he’ll probably just keep ripping people’s heads off for Cersei…at least, until the Hound shows up, right?
