'The Wiz Live' casting just keeps getting better and better
Nearly every day this week we’ve received amazing news about NBC’s upcoming The Wiz Live! Honestly, the casting for this production is next level — Shanice Williams as Dorothy! David Alan Grier! Stephanie Mills! Queen Latifah! Mary J. Blige! They are getting it SO RIGHT.
The latest announcement revealed that Glee’s Amber Riley and Orange is the New Black’s Uzo Aduba will be joining the cast and, oh boy, is that excellent. We already knew Amber, who will be playing Addaperle, the Good Witch of the North, has a fantastic voice. And we’re going to take a moment to honor said voice. It was hard to choose which number from Glee to pay homage to, so we’ll go with a classic.
Uzo Aduba’s “Crazy Eyes” on Orange is the New Black doesn’t sing quite as often, but more and more people are learning about Uzo’s crazy amazing real life talents. She’s a trained classical singer! According to her alma mater, Boston University, “she’s sung at the White House and at Paris’ Notre Dame cathedral,” all before her recent Emmy win. She gave us a sneak peak on The View a few weeks ago, and below can be heard singing, “By My Side,” from her time on Broadway in Godspell.
Also, the gals are clearly as excited as we are!
Amber’s time on Glee and Dancing with the Stars, plus Uzo’s Broadway background tell us they’re both more than capable to handle the pressures of a live musical.
The only two major roles left to be announced? The Scarecrow and The Tin Man. Who should round out this FANTASTIC cast? We have a feeling it will be two totally incredible people.
