The true meaning behind the "Macarena" is probably not what you thought
If there’s one song-and-dance combo that ’90s kids know by heart, it’s the “Macarena.” But, how well do you really know this popular tune?
Behind the song’s super catchy lyrics, there’s a shocking (childhood ruining) surprise. It turns out that Macarena is actually the name of a woman. Surprise #2: she loves her body (good for her though). Surprise #3: she is bored with her boyfriend and wants to change things up (which is putting it mildly). So, all along, these three MAJOR secrets were hidden beneath the surface (er, at least for those of us who didn’t get around to looking up the lyrics). You can read the lyrics in full here.
And JUST THINK – this song’s been played at a countless number of school dances, kids’ birthday parties, bar/bat mitvahs, and pretty much any other party/celebration/get-together that you can think of. In some cases, it’s actually the first dance that a child learns in elementary school.
Unsurprisingly, ’90s kids are freaking out and are holding onto their childhood innocence for dear life. But seriously, how do you recover from this kind of blow to your nostalgia? Distractify captured these ’90s kids’ collective shock when they learn the true motives of Macarena in “Macarena” and it’s hilarious:
And if it’s been awhile since you’ve heard “Macarena,” here ’tis. Hey —it’s still fun to dance to!
