Remember when Monica and Brandy fought over that boy in “The Boy is Mine” music video in the ’90s (1998 to be exact)? They were each sorry that the other seemed to be confused that the boy is mine (well, theirs). But no one actually knew who the boy was or who ended up with him. Until now. After 17 years of wondering who the boy in “The Boy Is Mine” is, our questions have finally been answered by Monica herself. And the answer is pretty surprising.
Monica sat down with HuffPost Live to discuss her new album Code Red, which comes out on Friday and brought up what we’ve all been wondering. “People are still asking, ‘Who got the boy?’ and there was no boy!” Monica said. “We played up the dramatics of it all, but we were 16 and 17 … There was no boy, no beef.”
Even though Monica and Brandy both won Grammys for the song, it seemed so obvious at the time that there was total beef between the two of them, but that just goes to show what savvy marketing can do.
“It started off as brilliant marketing [rather than real drama], and people started creating these skits, and then our fans divided and it became this real thing,” she said. “But now as us being adults, it doesn’t exist. Brandy makes amazing music, so why would I tell a fan of mine that you can’t support her? It’s really frustrating. I am a huge supporter of everyone in the business, especially her.”
Now here’s Monica talking about the non-beef between her and Brandy:
So there you have it. There’s nothing but love between them. We can finally put the nagging question to rest.
