This week, Spotify was crowned the world’s most popular streaming service by App Annie, outshining its longtime rival, Pandora. Though Pandora may still be a front runner in the states, Spotify’s 80 million+ users around the globe are giving us a pretty accurate representation of world’s most beloved jams. Bear in mind, these stats exclude megastars like Taylor Swift or Adele, who have opted out of the streaming service.

That said, Drake is the world’s most-streamed artist with over 1.8 billion streams to date. Rihanna comes in a close second, holding the title of “most streamed woman in the world” with over 1 billion streams. In case you’ve forgotten, she didn’t even released an album this year!

The most-streamed song of the year is Major Lazer’s “Lean On (feat. DJ Snake and MØ),” reaching nearly 550 millions plays, dethroning Ed Sheeran’s mega hit, “Thinking Out Loud.” In spite of this, Ed Sheeran still maintains his position as “most streamed artist of all time” with over 3 billion streams to date.

Norwegian producer Kygo (who you may know from his smash hit, “Stole The Show” featuring Parson James), was crowned Spotify’s newcomer of the year. He became Spotify’s first Spotlight artist ever to reach over 1 billion plays, which is pretty impressive considering his year-long career as a mainstream artist.

Even without the star power of  Adele (who sold 3.4 million albums in her first week) and Taylor Swift (who has sold just under 2 million albums this year), Spotify managed to come out as the champion of streaming. Congratulations to all of the artists! You can check out a full list of top 5 artists in each category (US-only) below.
