Retta got her new 'Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce' role thanks to a nine-year-old
I think it’s safe to say that Donna, played by the always wonderful Retta, was one of the most beloved characters on NBC’s Parks and Recreation. When the show ended last year, one of the hardest parts was saying goodbye to the amazing woman who coined the iconic phrase “treat yo’ self” and was integral to so many hilarious moments. It turns out Marti Noxon, creator of Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, and her nine-year-old daughter felt the same way, so they decided to do something about it.
Retta is joining the cast of Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce for their second season, and when she stopped by Seth Meyers last night to talk about the show, she told him exactly how her new role came to be.
Unsurprisingly, Retta’s Parks and Rec character was the favorite of the Marti and her daughter, who would always watch the series together. When they found out the show was ending, they couldn’t believe there wouldn’t be any more of her on their screens. Then, Marti’s daughter had an amazing idea: if Retta couldn’t be on that show, could she be on her mom’s? And thus the most amazing idea in the world became a reality. We can’t wait to see what kind of amazingness Retta brings to her new role.
