More Spider-Man? Yes, please. Stepping away from live-action, for Spider-Man’s next outing he’s going to be animated. Not only that, but one of the best animation duos will bring him to the big screen: Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Names don’t ring a bell? That’s OK, you’ve gotta at least know their last HUGE animated movie: The Lego Movie. Let me go ahead and say it, everything is awesome.

Sony is developing the animated feature, and it will have nothing to do with whatever the heck is happening in the Marvel Universe right now. (FYI: There are lots of crazy legal things happening with Spider-Man, like who can and can’t use his likeness. Sony technically owns the character, but they’re nice enough to basically “loan” him back to Disney/Marvel. We could spend hours talking about this).

According to the official press release for the movie, the movie will “exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, all of which are continuing.” Because, there are still more live-action Spider-Man movies from Sony to come, too! This animated flick will be a whole new adventure, regardless of what has and hasn’t happened in other films, be them Sony or Marvel. So first order of business: bring back Gwen Stacy.

While we’ve got this exciting news, we’ve still got a ways to wait for an animated Spider-Man. He’ll swing into action on July 20th, 2018.
