While 2017’s trashbag status is burning bright, there’s some good news to look forward to. Book nerds rejoice, as there’s going to be a follow up trilogy to Philip Pullman’s “His Dark Materials”!
You might remember back in 2007 (as if that was 10 years ago), a movie adaptation of the first book in the series, The Golden Compass (or The Northern Lights if you’re in the U.K.), was released starring Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, and Dakota Blue Richards. Despite the incredible source material, however, the movie wasn’t quite the critical and commercial success is could have been.
Now Philip Pullman, the author of the series, has confirmed that a brand new trilogy set in the universe(s) of “His Dark Materials” is in the works.
In an interview with NPR, Pullman confirmed that the follow up trilogy, titled “The Book of Dust” (named after the invisible conscious substance from the first trilogy), was to coming out.
Pullman was keen to point out, however, that the new trilogy wasn’t a direct sequel to “His Dark Materials,” which consisted of the books The Golden Compass (or Northern Lights), The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass, but was rather a companion series.
The new book series will comprise of three volumes, the first of which is set 10 years before The Golden Compass and is set for release later this year (U.K. publishers Penguin Random House have the release date sent for October 19th).
In the interview, the author revealed that the heroine of “His Dark Materials,” Lyra Belacqua, would feature in the new series, but not in the way that you might think.
“Well, the first book is set roughly ten years before the action of His Dark Materials. And the second book and subsequent books … are set ten years after it. So in the first one, Lyra is only a baby of about six months. So she’s not able to do very much, but she’s certainly the focus of intense activity on the part of the main protagonists,” he said. “In the second book she will be twenty years old, she’ll be an adult…”
Furthermore, publishers Penguin Random House detailed what else we can expect from the books, and we’re SO excited.
According to them, alethiometers, daemons, and the Magisterium all feature, while the plot will “focus on some new characters, as well as an ordinary boy who eagle-eyed readers may have spotted in Lyra’s story before. With Lyra, he is caught up in a terrifying adventure that takes him into a new world.”
Given that “His Dark Materials” have sold in excess of 17.5 million copies worldwide, we’re pretty sure that MANY people will be super excited about this news (us included).
The book, which is yet-to-be-titled, will be released in October this year. Now, if only we had an altheiometer we could use to predict more info about it…
