The Lego Movie was easily one of the best movies of 2014. If you ask me, it was seriously perfect (and it totally should have gotten an Oscar nod for Best Picture!). While there may have been initial skepticism toward a movie about Legos, considering its huge success it was quickly fast-tracked for a sequel. The next film, coming in 2018, will again follow Emmett’s adventures and will include one more awesome thing: more girl characters!

That’s right, the brilliant minds behind the Lego Movie, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, recently told the BBC that they will be incorporating more female characters into the sequel because, “it’s important to us that the movie plays broadly and that we inspire young women as much as we inspire young men.” Everything about that is awesome. While the first movie does include heroine Wyldstyle and the hilarious Princess Unikitty, this second one will include others and, according to Miller and Lord, “more female stuff.” While “stuff” is kind of a weird word to use, at least it’s something.

This news is serious levels of exciting and yet another step in the right direction toward bringing Legos into the world of both boys and girls. While Legos are typically considered to be a “boy toy” I know plenty of little girls — and female adults — who are huge Lego fans and would be incredibly pleased if the toys became a little more girl friendly. Just this past year, Lego actually took the advice of a 7-year-old girl named Charlotte who wrote a handwritten letter to the company complaining that her Lego sets had “barely any girl Legos.” So Lego went ahead and made an all-female Research Institute set, and yes it includes a telescope and dinosaur fossils. Once again, awesome.

The incorporation of more of this “female stuff” in the next Lego Movie is certainly something to celebrate. Considering that the real-life little boy in the movie had a little sister, maybe the movie will focus on her and her Legos (and Duplos). Either way, kudos Lego Movie! And 2018 seriously can’t come soon enough.
