Whoa: We're getting a new Red Priestess on 'Game of Thrones'
[This articles contains spoilers about season 5 and 6 of Game of Thrones— if you are into such things, like reading the last page of a book when you first start it, proceed]
News broke yesterday that there’d be a new Red Priestess on Game of Thrones and that this Red Priestess would be up-and-coming British actress Melanie Liburd. Deadline originally reported the story, but it was really announced by Liburd herself in this very excited Instagram post:
But do not worry: According to all reports that speculate on such things, this doesn’t mean we’re losing the show’s original Red Priestess, Melisandre—she of cryptic-witchy speak, boob-baring, bloody spells, terrifying smoke monsters and, in her spare time, child
murder sacrifice—currently played with arresting, if sometimes creepy, sexuality and power by actress Carice van Houten. In fact, it might mean GOT fans are getting TWO Red Priestesses to stir up cauldrons and trouble. Wheee!
Melisandre was last spotted riding her non-frozen, non-starving horse into Castle Black, and presumably hanging with the Night’s Watch so she can breathe life into handsomely-dead Jon Snow. And according to the Deadline, Melanie Liburd’s casting is “separate and different to the role of the red priestess, Melisandre, currently being played by Carice Van Houten.” So just who will Liburd be in the GOT worlds? The great GOT fan site, Watchers On the Wall , has photos of Liburd on set and everyone is claiming her character’s name is Kinvara, a second Red Priestess who also worships the Lord of Light, but—get this—believes Daenerys is the chosen one for the throne.
OK, that’s a terrifying witch lady we can get behind.
