Selena Gomez’s latest single, “Bad Liar,” came out just in time to become THE summer jam. And just when we thought things couldn’t get any better, the “Bad Liar” video was released, and it’s so not what we expected from Selena…in a good way!

The video follows different characters who are all played by Selena, caught up in a twisted love story. Selena falls in love with a hawt Farah Fawcett-esque gym teacher who’s HER DAD’S MISTRESS (or at least he wants her to be). It also features Taylor Swift Easter eggs and it’s set in the ’70s, so it’s all very groovy, baby. There’s also even more to the video that we didn’t know before.

In a recent Billboard interview, the “Bad Liar” video’s costume designer, Kari Perkins, revealed that she was inspired by the movie Dazed & Confused

Which makes total sense! Check out Selena’s “Bad Liar” video if you haven’t already:

And now watch this scene from the quintessential high school movie, Dazed & Confused:

All of the long hair and printed flowy tops are definitely similar. And it’s no wonder, because Perkins worked on Dazed & Confused, so they called on her for Selena’s ’70s-set music video. Clearly, they chose the right person, too. Perkins told Billboard,

Cue colossal jealousy of her clothing collection!

Certain themes in the two “films” are also similar.

From the high school bullying, sports, and misguided crushes, the “Bad Liar” video has more in common with the Matthew McConaughey-led film than just the costumes.

Plus, Selena’s video left us feeling a bit ~dazed and confused~ ourselves, so it’s not too surprising that the film served as inspiration for the music video. What will she come up with next?!
