In the last few years, Justin Bieber has grown and matured at lightning speed in front of our eyes (face tattoo incident not included). Oh yeah, and he’s actually come out with some pretty catchy songs!

A few months ago we learned what “Sorry” was really about, and now it’s time to learn the inspiration behind “Boyfriend.”

So, we know that the legendary Mike Posner co-wrote the song. But thanks to Vulture, we got wind of a video where Posner explains where the magic came from on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

“I was hanging out with my friend Blackbear [the artist] and he was playing guitar. I started singing this thing over it, and originally we had these lyrics that went, ‘Inside your bedroom, no one has to know, Inside your bedroom, that’s where we should go… ‘ but I never really liked those lyrics. And so I sat in the studio for hours, and came up with this statement: ‘If I was your boyfriend… ‘”

He goes on to explain how he likes ‘if/then’ statements in songs, so once he had those lyrics, it all unfolded from there. Basically, he makes songwriting sound incredibly EASY, like we could all just hang out with our friends and come up with a smash hit (we wish).

Here’s the video, which also includes Posner talking about his rituals during the recording process, and his collaboration with Bieber.

We are in awe of you, Mike Posner (aka songwriting GOD)! Keep delivering those ‘if/then’ statement songs, because your strategy is clearly working.

Now, none of this would be complete without hearing Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend” in all its glory.

These are talented folks, no doubt about that.
