Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, is probably one of the most versatile people in the entertainment industry. While most people know him as quirky college student Troy Barnes in Community and most recently comedy/drama, Atlanta, which he created and stars in, Childish Gambino has also established himself as a versatile recording artist.
While his previous two albums Camp and Because the Internet, were more traditional hip hop albums, with Gambino rapping on most tracks, his newest album Awaken, My Love!, is an amazing infusion of Hip Hop, Soul, and funk.
Awaken, My Love! quickly grabbed the attention of critics, who have compared it to tracks by iconic ’70s groups Sly and the Family Stone and George Clinton groups Funkadelic and Parliament. In an interview with Billboard, Gambino reveals that he grew up listening to and was inspired by the artists he’s now being compared to.
Gambino’s new direction surprised a lot of people, especially legendary The Roots frontman and producer Questlove, who revealed on his Instagram that he woke R&B icon D’Angelo up at 4 a.m. to listen to Awaken, My Love!
He recounted the experience on his Instagram below:
Fans on Twitter are also feeling the new album:
We love how Gambino isn’t afraid to take risks in his music and is always evolving as an artist. If this is how he’s continuing to evolve, we REALLY can’t wait to hear what he’s dropping next.
