The Star Wars universe is certainly no stranger to powerful women. Between the mighty General Leia and the all-out badassery of Rey, strong women are everywhere. So it’s about time a woman takes on a powerful role behind the camera, too.

And Lucasfilm would like a female director on Star Wars. Which is giving us, ahem, a new hope.

Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, recently spoke to Variety about the future of the franchise. While there were a lot of really awesome ideas for new storylines and spinoffs, probably the most exciting news was the hunt for more female directors.

It’s great to hear that at least they’re aware of the need for more women behind the camera.

We can totally see where Kennedy is coming from that the amount of pressure behind a major franchise film would be intense, especially with their gender being scrutinized. It’s great they want to make sure they take care of whoever has the creative reigns.

They’re specifically looking for women who are in the early stages of their directing career.

While we understand that the Star Wars universe is a major undertaking, we also think there are plenty of talented female directors who are completely ready for it (Hello, new Wonder Woman movie). Knowing that Lucasfilm is on the lookout for these women makes us even more stoked for the future of the franchise.
