The short before "Moana" lets Disney take us literally inside the human heart and we already love it
How many times has your brain talked your hunger cravings out of a stack of delicious-looking pancakes? Or your heart convince you that new crush may be embarrassing instead of exciting? In Disney’s new (and really adorable!) animated short Inner Workings, which debuts before Moana, we see these internal battles come to animated life.
Entertainment Weekly shared this exclusive preview of the Disney short, and now we can’t wait to see it!
The trailer for the Disney short introduces us to our hero, Paul. The struggle is very real for Paul.
Paul is the main human in the six-minute short by Walt Disney Animation Studios. However, the primary characters are Paul’s fearful brain and charismatic heart.
He’s dealing with issues many of us face all the time, like a job that isn’t so satisfying or dreams that seem a little scary to pursue.
The heart loves to shake it in the shower. The brain is content having Paul do mundane duties at work. Which would you rather do?
The new Disney teaser trailer asks us that very question — do you follow your head or your heart?
Veteran Disney animator Leo Matsuda, whose work includes Wreck-It Ralph and Big Hero 6, directed and wrote the short. Set in ‘80s California, the story is personally inspired by Matsuda having a mixed personality due to his mixed heritage.
Matsuda explains that the idea of a person having a literal internal tug of war came from a pretty brainy place — encyclopedias.
There’s a pretty universal message in the short, and that’s that life can be a bit of a balancing act with our emotions.
What a cool philosophy. We can’t wait to see how it plays out in the film! Moana and Inner Workings will be in theaters on November 23.
