The first trailer for Maisie Williams’ new X-Men movie is here, and we are not in Westeros anymore. New Mutants marks a *very* new direction for the X-Men superhero franchise, with the upcoming film being marketed as a full-on horror film.
Based on the trailer, the film — which stars the Game of Thrones actress, Stranger Things’ Charlie Heaton, Teen Wolf‘s Henry Zaga, The Originals‘ Blu Hunt, and The Witch‘s Anya Taylor-Joy as young mutants trapped in a secret facility — looks like it’ll capture classic horror tropes, with a mutant twist.
Featuring creepy dimly-lit hallways, eerie choir background music, and an ominous nurse, this trailer will be haunting us for weeks:
In the trailer, Hunt’s Danielle Moonstar (aka Mirage) is being asked a series of questions by the mysterious Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga) about abnormal patterns in her behavior. Meanwhile, the camera pans across a graveyard marked with numbers, a lie-detector test recording responses, and a person watching over security tapes. Guys, there is something very off about this place, and we’re not alone in thinking it.
Throughout the trailer, Mirage and her fellow mutants — Taylor-Joy’s Illyana Rasputin (Magik), Williams’ Rahne Sinclair (Wolfsbane), Heaton’s Sam Guthrie (Cannonball), and Zaga’s Roberto da Costa (Sunspot) — find themselves caught in a series of horrific events that leads them to believe that there may be something off about the facility holding them captive.
Yeah, we think Boone succeeded in the horror aspect of the film.
Boone, who also cowrote New Mutants with his childhood best friend and fellow filmmaker Knate Lee, added that the horror take on the comic of the same name was inspired by their mutual love of Stephen King. We’re both terrified and excited to see the film when it hits theaters in April 2018.
