Last night was one for the books for anyone who came of age in the early aughts. Why? Because Josie and the Pussycats celebrated its 16th anniversary with a concert in Los Angeles. It featured live music from the film performed by singer Kay Hanley (who was the actual singing voice of Josie in the film), plus a panel with the film’s stars Rachel Leigh Cook, Tara Reid, Rosario Dawson, and the film’s writer and director.

The crew would have reunited last year at the film’s 15th anniversary, but apparently, their schedules didn’t line up. Luckily, the long-awaited squad reunion finally happened!

During the Q&A, Cook told the audience that she still loves her co-stars, even if they don’t see each other that often.

Judging by her words (and everyone’s smiling faces), it feels like this reunion was very appreciated.

According to social media posts from those in attendance, Dawson may have made a surprise appearance at the show.

Fun fact: Beyonce, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, and Aaliyah all auditioned for Dawson’s role.

“The fact that Beyoncé, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, and Aaliyah came in to audition was crazy. I think it was 2000,” Director Harry Elfton revealed during the Q&A. “We read Left Eye twice. She really wanted to play the part. Beyoncé was really quiet and shy. Who knew? It was a comedy, and Aaliyah was more serious and thoughtful. We wanted someone who could really play the comedy.”

We’re thinking we may be overdue for a screening of Josie and the Pussycats.
