The lack of female directors in Hollywood is upsetting, especially with a new study noting there are almost 24 male directors for every female director, and Jessica Chastain is not having it Tbh, tons of women in Hollywood are sick of the systematic discrimination and sexism that keeps them out. Not only are more standing up against it, they’re voicing just how to overcome it.
Jessica Chastain is in the mix of bad-ass actresses who won’t let this topic slide, especially when someone comes knocking at her door (or Twitter handle) about it.
Chastain was showing some love for The Zookeeper’s Wife director Niki Caro on Twitter.
There was plenty of love coming back for Caro and female directors overall.
But hey, when everyone’s celebrating a good thing, there’s of course someone who wants to come and ruin it all.
Chastain was ready though — oh so ready.
The Zero Dark Thirty actress recently discussed the benefits of a female-helmed film in a letter for The Hollywood Reporter while on set for The Zookeeper’s Wife.
One major change? More women getting hired.
Chastain says she’s never been on a set with “so many women” until The Zookeeper’s Wife, from female screenwriters and producers to a camera operator and stunt coordinator.
“This comes from when women in power make room for other women,” Chastain says.
She adds that both genders being represented in a film project creates a “healthier point of view.”
“The energy is great, you all are working together as a community, and everyone is participating in the exchange of ideas.”
Chastain isn’t alone on calling for change in Hollywood, especially with excellent Twitter shade. Selma director Ava DuVernay recently shared this chart, showing exactly how dismal it is for women behind the camera.
These women aren’t messing around, and it’s about time for Hollywood (and sexist dudes in general) to shape up or ship out.
