The beloved hit-musical In the Heights will get the treatment it deserves: Jay-Z is taking the play onto the big screen. Harvey Weinstein made the announcement during his gala before the 89th Academy Awards.

In The Heights is a musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Algeria Hudes, written during Miranda’s sophomore year in college.

Quiara Algeria Hades remembers how the story was created, and “…wanting to create a piece of theater that also reflected the diversity of music in the neighborhood, just kind of taking a walk through a neighborhood. When I came on board I said, ‘okay, let’s just take a walk, give me a tour’ because I was new to New York in general.”

In The Heights has a list of achievements and awards — among the most notable, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and four Tony Awards. The musical is a story set in Washington Heights and explores the lives and experiences of the community. Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that a new version of the In the Heights script has been submitted, but we still have no word on the cast. We are crossing our fingers that Lin-Manuel Miranda gets to star!
