There were a lot of…odd stories to come out of Suicide Squad. If you’ve seen the movie, you know that the stories from the set pretty much match up with what you THINK happened during shooting. Most of the on-set shenanigans can be attributed back to Jared Leto, who played the (not-really-seen) Joker throughout the movie. He went totally method for the movie, and basically BECAME The Joker. And that meant sending a live rat to co-star Margot Robbie.

Because nothing says love between The Joker and Harley Quinn like a live rat.

We can only imagine how, um, thrilled Robbie must have been to receive such a thoughtful gift from her on-screen puddin’. And if you need to know more about this rat gift exchange, you’re in luck! Leto has just revealed exactly where he got the rat! He got it in New York City!

Where? Literally off the street. Talking to GQ, when asked if he bought or caught the rat, Leto didn’t exactly give a clear answer, and instead allude to the fact that NYC is known to be home to lots of rats:

“Well, in New York, you’re never farther than three feet from a rat. There are rats everywhere, man. You want a rat, I can get you a rat. There are harder things to get!”

If Leto had gone into a pet store to procure this rat, he would have been like “Yeah, I got this rat at this really cool pet store down on 7th street, and it was awesome, and the owner was so friendly!!” But he doesn’t do that, leaving us to draw the only conclusion, which is that he somehow snagged a rat off the street and handed it off to MTV Movie Awards nominee Robbie. As you do. Because that’s not weird at all.

At least these off-beat antics certainly paved way for a spectacular performance from both Leto, and Robbie, in Suicide Squad. But hopefully for Suicide Squad 2, he just gifts her maybe not living things, and certainly not living things off the street.
