Okay Guardians fans, listen up. It’s time to put your thinking caps on because there’s a new theory that might point the way to the mysterious Guardians of the Galaxy easter egg that director James Gunn has vowed to keep secret. He’s been teasing this Easter egg since the first movie, and has claimed no one’s found it yet (but a few have come close). This might be a tad complicated, but let’s deep dive into this potential coded message.

Warning: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and Vol.2 spoilers ahead!

So, you just saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and you’re just dying to talk theories? Well, this is the place for you. Over at Screen Rant,  a theory has surfaced about a Guardians of the Galaxy easter egg that mega-fans have been looking for. According to the deep dive, using a fairly simple code, the secret to Meredith Quill’s fatal cancer might’ve been revealed before we even knew to search for the reason. How?

In Guardians of the Galaxy, locations were referred to by coordinates. Some real locations and some random numbers. It turns out if you decode those “random” numbers, you actually get a few phrases. Luckily, Screen Rant did the leg work for us, and here’s what it looks like.

Okay, so as we discover in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Peter’s father Ego actually caused his mother’s cancer (HOW DARE YOU). And here in this image, we see multiple instances of Meredith’s cancer appearing in the coded text from the first film — with the word X (which could also mean her ex, right?!).

This theory is pretty awesome. And this is only the beginning, because other questions like the origin of Ego and his connection to Knowhere are also explained in this theory so have fun! The best part is that it could’ve all been there in the first film — years before the second one was released. We’ll just be sitting here waiting for James Gunn to confirm or deny until Guardians 3 comes out.
