Emily Blunt won't be in the “Sicario” sequel and we're not thrilled with the explanation
We love Emily Blunt. Seriously, there’s nothing that actress cannot do. She’s got both comedic and dramatic chops, and if the new Mary Poppins movie is indication, the woman can sing. So imagine our surprise when we learned that Emily Blunt will not be returning for the Sicario sequel Soldado. That’s right, despite the many rave reviews Emily Blunt received as badass FBI agent Kate Macy, screenwriter Taylor Sheridan has made it known that he did not write Kate Macy into the sequel’s script. And, truth be told, we are not thrilled with his explanation.
As Taylor Sheridan told The Wrap when they asked about Emily Blunt’s role:
He then continued:
Darn it! But Emily Blunt’s portrayal was just so damn good. And how come her co-stars Josh Brolin and Benecio Del Toro get to return for the sequel?
But Taylor Sheridan did offer some hope for Kate’s future return:
Hmm. We maybe don’t entirely buy that you couldn’t come up with a new and exciting direction for the character (and why would she need to be kidnapped? Couldn’t she do the rescuing?) But unfortunately, writers know that they only can write the ideas they have, not the ones they wish they had. Still, we hope he’s not kidding about a future return.
And Emily Blunt isn’t the only Sicario heavyweight not returning for the sequel. Sicario director Denis Villeneuve will not be directing the sequel. Instead, Stefano Sollima will take the reins. We wish him — and the whole cast — the best of luck.
