"Captain Underpants" is officially becoming a movie, and our third-grade selves just fist pumped
Remember the Captain Underpants books? We sure do. Silly, hilarious, and somewhat provocative, they totally caught our attention as kids. Now, there’s a movie in the works. YES — a Captain Underpants movie starring Ed Helms is coming, and we are SO excited.
After all these years, Captain Underpants still surprises us – it’s one of those books we never knew were banned; we’re always surprised when we remember that. Plus, it gives us a wonderful reminder of what it was it was like to be ~ 8 years old, which honestly just makes us smile (there are reasons we’re obsessed with nostalgia).
In case you need a reminder (third grade was a loooong time ago, after all), Dav Pilkey’s Captain Underpants books follow two fourth-graders who hypnotize their horrible principal. As a result, the principal thinks he’s a superhero.
Captain Underpants is animated. (TBH we’re thankful it’s not a live-action film for several reasons, namely the Captain’s choice of dress.) Kevin Hart voices George Beard, while Silicon Valley’s Thomas Middleditch voices Harold Hutchins, the two fourth graders in question. Ed Helms voices the principal, because of course he does.
We can’t wait to see that on the big screen. Plus, the books are totally irreverent and bend genres. Soren says the film does the same. Apparently, the films mixes more typical CG animation with other media, like 2D scenes. That sounds super cool.
Of course, we’re still missing a vital part – the villain. With over a dozen Captain Underpants books out there, who did the filmmakers choose? Turns out, it will be Professor Poopypants – and actor Nick Kroll voicing him. “I mean, with a name like that, he’s kind of irresistible,” Soren says.
TBH, we totally agree. We can’t wait to see the film when it lands in theaters June 2nd, 2017.
