Captain Planet has so many good qualities — I mean, he cares about the environment, and for kids who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s, he was likely the reason as to why we became so good at recycling and reusing products today. He definitely had an impact on Leonardo DiCaprio, as he’s taken an interest in helping create a Captain Planet movie.
Oh yes. You read that right. Captain Planet might be coming to the big screen if all goes to plan. Get your Planeteer rings out and celebrate!
DiCaprio’s production company, Appian Way, is getting together with Paramount to work together and figure out the details. They’re hoping to get the rights for the character, which means that Captain Planet might make a comeback in a big way.
Of course, rumor has it that the Captain might not be as — well — passionate. According to The Verge, this movie might depict him as being a bit jaded, and definitely washed-up. Which, in a way, is kind of refreshing — we think that a realistic portrayal will be a little more intriguing to past fans. If you’ve spent decades lecturing people about cutting the plastic 6-pack packages to help save fish, you might feel the same way.
If it takes place in present day, it’ll also be interesting to see what our favorite Planeteers are up to.
This actually isn’t the first time that people have been in talks about a Captain Planet movie — prior attempts just seemed to fall through in the past. The good news with this attempt is that the script, written by Jono Matt and Glen Powell (the latter from Scream Queens), is already completed.
We seriously can’t wait to see this in theaters!
