One of our favorite filmmakers, director Ava DuVernay, volunteered to direct a new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie. And we are 100% here for this. From her groundbreaking documentary 13th to her upcoming adaptation of A Wrinkle In Time, we love everything DuVernay makes.
It all started when BBC Radio invited Road Dahl’s widow Liccy Dahl and biographer Donald Sturrock on air for a chat to celebrate what would be Roald Dahl’s 101st birthday. During the interview, the pair dropped a massive reveal that got Twitter excited. They shared that Roald originally wrote Charlie from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as black.
It’s obviously a shame that this happened.
The clip hit the internet and the internet was abuzz. That’s when Ava DuVernay threw her hat in the ring for a remake.
And of course, everyone loved the idea and couldn’t wait to throw out suggestions for an all-star casting.
We would love both of these!
Other people suggested Daveed Diggs or Chiwetel Ejiofor for the next Willy Wonka. While we have no idea if there is any chance for this movie to get off the ground, we’ll keep our fingers crossed. After all, this wouldn’t be the first time Ava DuVernay directed a movie that started on social media. She’s also directing a buddy comedy starring Lupita Nyong’o and Rihanna that got picked up by Netflix after the idea became popular on Twitter.
We know Ava DuVernay would be up for the challenge for sure! In the meantime, we’ll enjoy all the fan castings.
