Earlier this year, Katy Perry incited a global fangirl freakout when she brought Missy Elliott to the stage during the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Unsurprisingly, Elliott absolutely killed it; and like everyone else, I found myself drowning in a sea of nostalgia and totally in awe of her incomparable greatness once more.
The performance put a definitive end to Elliott’s hiatus from music — and based on the Internet’s reaction, it was obvious the world was ready for a comeback.
Ever since, Elliott has been teasing the world with that very possibility. In February, Elliott tweeted that she was back in the studio with Pharrell — and now, we finally get a little taste of what they’ve been cooking up. According to Complex, a sneak peek of Missy Elliott’s single “WTF (Where They From)” premiered last night during the Monday Night Football halftime show on ESPN. The track is being used to help promote the 2015-16 NBA season, and it’s just as great as you’d expect — but the news gets better.
According to a press release, a snippet from “WTF (Where They From)” will air during ESPN’s pre-game show NBA Countdown this Wednesday prior to the opening night doubleheader, and throughout ESPN’s NBA coverage early this season. (Shout-out to my fellow remaining Lakers fans!) It’s the perfect match for Lebron James, Kevin Durant, and all our other faves dancing and dunking on court. Check it out for yourself below.
Let it be known: The Missy Elliott comeback is nigh, and we are so very ready. Just last month, Janet Jackson released a brand new track featuring the hip-hop legend, “BURNITUP!” and it, too, was absolutely perfect. “WTF (Where They From)” drops on November 13th — and we can’t wait to hear what else Elliott has in store for us.
