This statement about Princess Diaries heartthrob Michael Moscovitz still reigns true: “He fixes cars, he plays guitar, and he can sing. He is so hot!” That would explain why our hearts are beating to the tune of this news: Michael may be returning for Princess Diaries 3!
Ever since director Gary Marshall mentioned that he’s planning to shoot a third movie once Anne Hathaway gives birth, we’ve been praying to the movie gods that certain characters return. Considering that Michael was replaced by Nicholas Devereaux (aka Chris Pine) in the sequel, a secret part of us has been hoping that Michael will return to win back Mia’s love. After all, they do end up together in the book series by Meg Cabot, the one that inspired the movies in the first place.
Apparently, Robert Schwartzman (who played Michael Moscovitz) wasn’t notified about this major development in the world of Genovia. “Isn’t there going to be a third one?” he asked, when being interviewed by Glamour at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Once he was clued in that a third one may indeed happen, Schwartzman was hesitant. “I don’t know how I feel about it. If they came to me and said, ‘Hey, we want you to continue the series. We did something right the first time. Let’s keep going,’ I don’t know. You have to take everything one step at a time,” stated Robert. “I’d have to see where they’re taking it. Like, what do you want to do with the story? What is this character now? What do you want it to be? It’d be cool to at least have the conversation about it if they want to do it.”
Okay, so at least Robert’s open to the idea of returning. Fun fact: He wasn’t in the second film because he was busy touring with his band Rooney. So, as long as the band’s not touring, we don’t see why Michael shouldn’t make a comeback (especially if he fixes cars and plays guitar).
