It’s finally been confirmed that Mahershala Ali will star in True Detective Season 3, and ALL THE YES.

There have been rumors that Ali — who won an Oscar earlier this year for his turn in Moonlight — would be appearing in the anthology crime series’ third run, and Variety has announced that the rumors are true.

Of course, the first season of the show, which followed the 17-year hunt for a serial killer, starred Hollywood stalwarts Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and won HEAPS of praise from audiences and critics. Meanwhile, the show’s second season, which was set in California, dealt with corruption and murder, and starred acting talent such as Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams.

After the second season of True Detective wasn’t met with as much critical adoration as the first, it wasn’t clear whether the show would return for a third outing. However, earlier this year there was some chatter that the show would, in fact, be returning.

Our friends Entertainment Weekly reported that the show’s creator, Nic Pizzolatto, had written two episodes, and had brought Deadwood scribe David Milch on board, too.

The news came after a statement released by HBO’s  head of programming in 2016 that confirmed that the show wasn’t over. “It’s a valuable franchise, it’s not dead, we just don’t have a take for a third season yet,” they said.

Well, it seems that True Detective writers have found a take, and that take involves Mahershala Ali.

According to a report by Deadline, Ali has signed a deal which will see him play a role in the show’s third season, which is just awaiting a green light from HBO.

The news was confirmed at HBO’s summer TCA presentation by president of programming Casey Bloy, who also shared that he had read five scripts.

“They are terrific… I was very impressed and excited,” he said. “We are talking to directors, and when we have a director we want to hire, it will be a go.”

Bloy also said that HBO had learned from Season 2, stating that rather than rush scripts through, they allowed Pizzolatto time to ruminate on and flesh out ideas.

Confirming the news, Ali took to Instagram to share poster for the show.

There’s no release date yet for True Detective‘s third season, but given what an acting talent Mahershala Ali is, we’re pretty sure it’s going to be incredible.
