The best pop music always has an emotional undertone, which is why we can’t get enough of Lorde’s new track “Perfect Places.”

The New Zealand-born singer premiered the song, which is taken from her upcoming second album Melodrama, yesterday (June 1st), and it follows dance-pop banger “Green Light,” and the tender ballad “Liability” as the third track to be released from the record, which is set for release on June 16th.

Once the song was released, Lorde shared a message on Facebook where she spoke about the track, and it sounds like it has a pretty special meaning for her, too.

“today, PERFECT PLACES is out in the world. this is a special one,” she wrote. “i was living in new york during summer last year, writing melodrama – i’d ride across the brooklyn bridge every day, or sit on the subway uptown in the heat, then go back home to new zealand winter for a week at a time to party with my friends.”

Continuing, Lorde explained that, at the time, she felt that her life was a little weird, describing it as a “little etch-a-sketch i kept scribbling on and resetting.”

Listen to “Perfect Places” below.

We love a song that you can dance along to but that is also kinda emotional, too, and “Perfect Places” totally delivers on that front. We also like that at the start it pays homage to Lorde’s debut album, Pure Heroine.

Meanwhile, Lorde recently opened up to The New York Times about her upcoming album Melodrama, explaining that the collection was actually a semi-concept album about the story of a house party where, over the course of a night, she examines the aspects of her life.

“With a party, there’s that moment where a great song comes on and you’re ecstatic, and then there’s that moment later on where you’re alone in the bathroom, looking in the mirror, you don’t think you look good, and you start feeling horrible,” she explained about the concept.

Given that we only have a few weeks to wait for Lorde’s new album, it’s safe to say that we’re pretty excited, especially if the songs are as good as the three that we’ve already heard!

Lorde releases Melodrama on June 16th.
