'Rocky Horror' fans we have some news (and it involves Laverne Cox)
Few cult movies are as beloved as 1975’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The story of Brad and Janet, two upstanding young lovebirds who end up stranded at the castle of a mad scientist during a rainstorm, is a staple of midnight showings and Halloween. It’s no wonder that Fox has decided to remake it for TV, and now that casting news is coming in, we’re pretty excited! The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Laverne Cox herself will be staring as Dr. Frank-N-Furter!
In the film, Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon), find themselves broken down on an old country road after getting engaged. They decide to see if the nearby castle has a phone, despite the well-known fact that castles don’t have phones. They discover a celebration of bizarre, morbid, and totally out-there characters come together to welcome Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s newest creation to the world. Then, basically, all hell breaks loose.
Played by Tim Curry in the original, the good doctor is a “sweet transvestite” who spends most of the film in heels and fishnets. He also falls madly in love with his own creation, Rocky, a studly blonde bodybuilder who wins the hearts of a few other castle inhabitants.
The musical, which is a send-up of B movies and features some incredible songs, is being directed and choreographed by Kenny Ortega, who was behind High School Musical. If it sounds like an odd pairing, fear not: Gail Berman and Lou Adler, who produced the original film, are returning as executive producers, as well.
What’s more, with Laverne Cox running the castle, we’re wholeheartedly won over and ready to do the Time Warp!
