True fact: I admire Kim Kardashian’s work ethic and willingness to put it all out there and see what happens. Kim is fearless when it comes to showcasing herself in unflattering ways (in a recent episode of Kim and Kourtney take Miami, she had her sister, Khloe, smell a towel she rubbed on her vagina), and let’s not forget the blood facial. And of course, her penchant for unflattering clothes. But regardless of what Jon Hamm said about her, Kim is not a moron, and she knows when something doesn’t fit well, and yet? And yet she chooses to leave the house six months pregnant, in a bandage dress, eating an ice cream cone. If that doesn’t scream “and no f*cks” were given that day”, I don’t know what does.

Gloria Steinem said that Kim’s body isn’t any of our business, and for the first time in my 29 years on earth, I disagree with her. Kim has made a career out of making her body our business. From porno to diet pills, what she looks like is what we’re paying for. And you know what? Good for her for finding a business model that works.

Now the tabloids are saying that Kim is gaining extra baby weight so she can get a promotional deal with a diet company. It’s not exactly healthy, and gestational diabetes is no joke, but if it’s true, then so what? It’s no more ridiculous than an already skinny star losing twenty pounds to land the role of a starving character in a movie. We tend to criticize those whose lives we don’t understand, and while the rest of us are clamoring to lose weight or hide our bodies, a woman who is monetizing a very natural part of life (pregnancy and weight gain), is seen as a rebel who must be taken down. We want to see pictures of Kim looking terrible because it makes us feel like she’s a fallen star, and Americans, especially bored Americans, eat that stuff up.

But Kim is doing what so many clever women before her have done, and making the best out of the situation. Because listen, it’s not like she can quit reality TV at this point, or start living a secluded life and become an office slag like the rest of us. She’s carrying Kanye West’s baby for pete’s sake! What other options does she have? Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if she was in cahoots with the tabloids who write nasty things about her. Each time they take a jab at her weight, she probably makes a buck. And hey, that doesn’t seem like a bad gig if you can get it.
