Having finally made her return to music, Kesha has opened up about how healing the process of making her new album has been for her, and we can only imagine.

Kesha, of course, has had a hard few years wrapped up in legal proceedings with producer Dr. Luke, whom she has accused of sexual and emotional abuse. Part of this has meant that the singer hasn’t released any new music for years…until now.

Earlier this month, the 30-year-old released the emotionally charged power ballad “Praying,” and announced her new album, Rainbow. She also shared another track, the empowering banger “Woman,” which celebrates womanhood.

Of course, given how eager she has been to make and release music again, Kesha has been explaining how cathartic making her new album was for her.

Dropping by Elvis Duran and the Morning Show, the “Tik Tok” singer opened up about how excited she was to be putting out new music.

“I just didn’t know if I was ever going to be able to put out music ever again,” the singer admitted. “I really didn’t know and some days it felt like I was kind of clinging onto this ghost of an idea [and] that got me through a lot of years.”

While writing music was something she wanted to do, Kesha did say that she still struggled to get up and go and record, something she also explained in her Lenny Letter essay.

“You know sometimes it felt more real, sometimes it felt less real, and I kept waking up and I’d say, ‘Okay, you can’t just lay in bed, you got to get up, you got to go to the studio,’ even when I really didn’t want to I would. It’s kind of a testament that you’ve got to show up for yourself,” she revealed.

The album’s title, Rainbow, also has a pretty incredible meaning.

We’re so glad that through making and releasing music, Kesha has been able to find some peace with her experiences. It’s clear from listening to “Praying” that she is finally expressing herself in the way that she wants to, and that’s pretty inspiring.

Kesha releases Rainbow on August 11th. “Praying” and “Woman” are out now.
