Katie Ledecky's reason for crying on the Olympic podium is making US cry
Katie Ledecky has been a total inspiration this year. Whether it’s been seeing her win five (that’s right, FIVE) medals while also managing a chronic illness, to crushing her own world records, to that pic of her as a kid meeting her hero Michael Phelps (too…much…cuteness…system…overload), we’ve been loving every minute of it.
And Friday night, when she stood on the podium to accept her gold medal for winning and destroying the record in the 800-meter freestyle, she got teary-eyed…which made…US teary-eyed.
In an interview for Today, she gave her reason for crying in such a happy moment:
“As the flag was being raised I could see my family right under the flag … the emotions just hit me and I had to let it all out.”
And in the understatement of the century, Katie also said,
“I have a good internal clock and can tell how fast I am swimming. I could tell I was having a good swim last night.” (She crushed her former world record by two full seconds).
Katie will head off to Stanford in the fall (as if she wasn’t already accomplished enough), leaving us to daydream about being Katie Ledecky’s college roommate. Seriously, how cool would that be?!
